ECR Road Trip from Chennai

The East Coast Road (ECR) runs south from Chennai along the Bay of Bengal all the way to Pondicherry, threading past fishing villages, UNESCO stone monuments, salt pans and surf beaches. Below is every stop worth the detour, in the order you'd meet them driving south — with distances measured from RYST 109A, our private beach villa at Pearl Beach, Parmankeni, Cheyyur, which sits roughly midway along the route, about 85 km south of Chennai.

The Mahabalipuram cluster

About 34–35 km from the villa, Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) is the single richest stretch of the drive — a UNESCO World Heritage circuit of 7th–8th century rock-cut temples, all walkable from one another.
